Chaco Canyon

Chaco Canyon is a remarkable place. It was built a thousand years ago by the Chacoans. The feets that were accomplished there rival those of the ancient Egyptians, totally advanced and in the middle of nowhere. And it was HOT!
(It's worth doing a little research on.)

New Mexico

This was taken in the early morning in the parking lot of Wal-Mart. We needed some supplies for the long day ahead. The funniest thing about it though, was that we were not alone, the parking lot was half-full of people just waiting to shop...weird.

Mountains and cliffs everywhere. The red of the rock against the deep blue of a cloudless sky was spectacular.

This is the road to Chaco Canyon. The site is home to ancient ruins that had been used for hundreds of years by the native peoples. This road was ROUGH. I was trying to go slow because it was pretty hard on the car. Two and a half hours on this out into the middle of nowhere...

Cadillac Ranch

Just west of Amarillo there stand six half buried cadillacs. An artist from San Francisco buried them in the sixties and they remain aimed at the sky as a monument to all human achievement. It's pretty cool, they're right off the freeway and FREE!

Brother Mike standing in front of his own personally vandalized portion of the vehicle...

And for those law abiding citizens out there, painting on the cars IS legal. There were signs saying so.....extra cool.

...still going...

I wish i remembered exactly where this was...Oklahoma i think, maybe Texas, but anyway the landscape started changing. It was getting pretty "indian country" which is what made us feel like cowboys for a little while. Everytime we started getting tired of driving, we thought about what it would've been like to do it in a covered wagon like the old days...no thanks.

Road food.
Mike had a little more of a problem with it than i did. (i guess i'm used to eating like crap, if at all) The best thing i found to eat as far as a snack items go were "flamin' hot funjuns". Man, they're either new or they don't sell 'em at home, mmmmmm...

Everything's bigger in Texas...yes sir, look at the size of this cross! We HAD to stop. It's the second biggest cross in the northern hemisphere! Dude!

And Off We Go...

So, after an emotional goodbye to friends and family, my brother and i headed out on the road from Milwaukee, WI. My parents, as always, were extremely supportive about the whole thing. We checked the tire pressure, gassed up the car and took off...

Around St. Louis you start to feel like you're hitting the point of no return. It's far enough to feel far from home, and if you keep going a few more hours, you really are too far to turn back. Bittersweet...

My brother and i lived together for nine years so a couple days in the car is no big deal. We traded off driving and enjoyed the idea of heading out west. The fact that gas is so cheap meant that we could take our time as well......

bjk

Greetings,
I've started this little blog...actually i HATE the "b" word so much i won't even refer to it as such. So, i started this "page" to share my adventures with my friends, family and the world. As most of you know, i decided to leave my beloved hometown of Milwaukee and take my sister up on a offer too good to refuse. Free room and board till i figure "what i'm gonna do". i love Milwaukee and am proud to call it home, but the need to explore and branch out before arthritis sets in for good was too much to ignore any longer. So for those of you who care, this is a chance to share some thoughts and feelings about my own opinions of existence. (and show some photos taken with my new cool camera)
Enjoy!

My brother and i headed for San Francisco on Sunday, October 26th in my 2000 Mercury Sable. i call her "mother mary". We proceeded to drive her across this great country following historic Route 66 for the majority of the way.
